The Past Five Months in Words and Pictures

15 Jan

If someone were to ask me back in August where I’d be in January 2012, I would say, “Probably hating my life at The Hartford.. struggling with bills… trying to find joy in daily life..”

Okay, maybe not.

But to be perfectly honest, life was so mundane towards the end of the summer. It became a bit less mundane when I lost my job the first week of August. I won’t go into details about how it happened, but let’s just say I started caring less and less about my current job at the time, starting making careless mistakes, and threw discipline out the window. My boss told me, “Out of all my years in management, this is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. But this might be the best thing that ever happens to you.”

I walked out of the building, called my boyfriend, and started crying, knowing that all managers who have to let their employees go probably say that. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know what to do first. My manager told me not to do anything that day. He told me to wake up tomorrow, start fresh, gather everything together, and tackle everything I need to do after a full nights sleep.

I decided to go the route less traveled after someone loses their job.. Most people I know try to take advantage of unemployment. Since I turned 16, I had never NOT had a job, even in college. I tried to get a full night of sleep, then had my boyfriend to come over the next day to work on my resume with me. He helped me to make it look professional and sound brief and to the point. I went head on into the job search and applied to at least 40 jobs. Some of which I was interested in, some very similar to my old job, some were just to get the practice of filling out applications. I hadn’t heard anything in a week, and of course, in my desperation I immediately become discouraged. My boyfriend assured me over and over again that I wouldn’t hear from anyone until at least a few weeks. I kept pressing on.

I would wake up, stay by my phone and my email from 8am-5pm every day. It was like a full time job. Then one day, I got into the shower and got out at 5:45pm and I was getting a call from unknown number. It was Prudential Financial, the one job that seemed somewhat like my old job, but more challenging and interesting. She told me I had a phone interview the next day. I seemed to have nailed the phone interview and that was followed by a few assessments.  The job recruiter then scheduled me a formal interview at the building.

The formal interview was probably the most intense interview of my life. I walked into a group of about 6-7 people interviewing for the same position in the same interview time slot. When I sat down to be interviewed, there were a man and a woman ready to shoot questions at me, upon telling me, “We’ve been interviewing people all day since 8am (then 6:45pm) and we’ve probably heard all of the answers you’ve probably already used in past interviews. So make your responses original, because you want to be remembered, or you wont be hired.”

With that said, I thought I answered everything in the interview with the best of my ability and I was pretty sure I told them things that they hadn’t heard that day already. I waited two weeks to hear back. I knew I didn’t get the job. My boyfriend told me that it wouldn’t hurt to contact my job recruiter to get a status, so I did just that. She informed me that a few people they were interested in were on vacation during the 2 day interview process so they had delayed the decision process, and that I would most likely be hearing from her before the end of the week. Meanwhile, I was interviewing at several other places including insurance, internet, and cable companies. The other interviews were very promising but none of them were that challenging or suitable to my job needs. The job at Prudential Financial was at a building 1.2 miles away from my apartment, it required obtaining your Series 6 & 63 licenses, which was something I wanted to add to my experience, and it required job skills that I was already partially familiar with.

I received a call from another company I interviewed with around 5pm on a Wednesday and was told I got the job. It was a job, so I was still happy about landing it, but I was still hoping I’d receive a call from Prudential. My boyfriend and I decided to celebrate and get dinner and a movie. After the movie, around 9:30pm, I noticed I missed a call and was left a voicemail. It was my job recruiter from Prudential saying that she had an offer for me. I was ecstatic. I had achieved the first choice job in my 2 month long job search. I received details on my new job the next day and was told my start date. I started receiving materials in the mail for my series 6 and series 63 license and knew I’d be able to pass. I had to pass. If I didn’t pass, I didn’t have a job.

I started my first day and had a great feeling about it. But in the back of my head, I knew I had to start studying. The day I took my first test, the series 6, is a whole other story in and of itself. Let’s just say that I had the worst series of events happen to me 12 hours before my test and right up until the minute I took it. I missed a pass grade by ONE POINT. I was pissed. I couldn’t retake it for another 30 days due to FINRA rules. Meanwhile, I took my series 63 state law test, and passed with flying colors. It gave me the boost of confidence I needed to take the 6 test again. But when the date finally came again, I had under-prepared and did worse. I was at my wits end. Literally. I didn’t know if I could go through another rigorous 30+ days of intense studying without giving up.

I didn’t let a day go by without studying. Well.. maybe Christmas Day. Let me tell you, it SUCKED studying for a test that your job depends on during the holidays. I got through it though. January 7th came and I don’t think I had ever felt so nervous in my entire life. Not only is it a standardized test in a controlled room with cameras everywhere with people checking your pockets and hands, but this is a test that could make or break my job. I got through the test, submitted it, and received my passing score. Nothing can describe the sheer joy I felt when I saw that score, as well as the hours and hours after the test. I could not STOP SMILING. I could finally enjoy my new-found job and live a normal life.

Anyways, sorry for the novel. My New Years Resolution was to post more reviews, post more Nail of the Day entries, and film more makeup tutorials. I’m sorry I’ve neglected this blog, but as you may know, my job and well being comes first. And with this new job, comes a better income where I have the luxury of buying new things to review for you guys so you can find out about fantastic products!

NOTD – China Glaze: Concrete Catwalk

5 Oct

I’ve been really into the ugly color trend for nail polish, specifically dark colors. I saw this color from the China Glaze from their new Metro collection and I immediately gravitated towards it.

China Glaze - "Concrete Catwalk"

This color is quite a wet formula, but two coats makes the polish completely opaque.

I really enjoyed how shiny this looked with my top coat.

How do you guys like it? Would you wear it? 🙂

NOTD – Butter London: Yummy Mummy

3 Oct

I recently had the advantage of scooping up some Butter London nail polishes Buy 1 Get 1 Free at Ulta a few weeks ago and I’ve got to say… I’m impressed thus far. I’m a huge fan of nudes to begin with, but “Yummy Mummy” by Butter London takes the cake.

Butter London - Yummy Mummy w/ Sally Hansen - Strobelight on ring finger

This tan-based nude has a slight shimmer to it but applies very shiny. I probably could’ve gotten away with just one coat, but I have a habit of just applying two for safe measure.

Sally Hansen Hard as Nails in Strobe Light is such a great compliment color for the ring finger. It’s a very pink-based neutral glitter with lots of colors that reflect the Butter London polish.

GAH I’m in love with this combo! 🙂

What do you guys think? Would you wear it?

Nail of the Day – Essie in “Jazz”

23 Sep

I’m a big fan of nude nail polish and the brand Essie has a lot to offer. “Topless and Barefoot” and “Sand Tropez” are two of my favorites, but I purchased another famous nude color from the brand a few weeks ago.

Essie - "Jazz"

This neutral color is more of a tan, muddy color. I prefer this when I want a nude color that doesn’t have too much pinks or browns in it.

This color is also surprisingly shiny for a nude. Look how beautiful it is on my nails!

What do you think? Would you wear it?

Pin Up Look

20 Sep

A few nights ago I started experimenting with my gel liners and bold lips. To add to the look, I pinned up my bangs in a poof style and teased the back for a high ponytail. The first thing my roommate said was, “You look like Gwen Stefani!” Well, that would be nice wouldn’t it? 😉 Maybe if I still was rocking my bleach white-blonde hair.

I figured I would show you guys this look in pictures in case you wanted to see a tutorial on it in the future!

So to start off this look, I revolved my face makeup around the way I played up my eyes. I recently purchased the limited edition MAC fluid line in “Midnight Blues” from the MAC Me Over collection. This gel liner is similar to their navy blue liner, Waveline, but there is definitely some green/turquoise tones to it as well. I used this gel liner on a very thin eye liner brush and made a fun wing on the outside of my eye.

I also added the gel eye liner subtly to my water line, but I didn’t want to go overboard since I wanted the focal point to be my lips and lashes! Oooo that has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? 😉 To amp up my lashes, I used Maybelline The Falsies mascara in black to really flare them out & make a statement with the winged liner. I kept my eye shadow simple too! I wanted a pretty blank canvas for my lids to accentuate the liner, so I just used MAC’s eye shadow in Naked Lunch all over my lid and blended in MAC eye shadow Wedge in the crease.

Something about this lighting makes me look orange, but anyway… I wanted to keep my face kind of neutral for the look, so I skipped any bright blushes and stuck to a matte bronzer to contour and dust on my cheekbones. I also used MAC Mineralized Skin Finish in Soft & Gentle to highlight my face.

And now for the lips! I used a medium pink lip liner just to outline my lip shape and prime my lips for this bright color. I used MAC lipstick in “Girl About Town” which looks very hot pink on camera, but in person it is a very dark pink fuchsia color that looks almost red. I know in my experience, I’ve had trouble pulling off red lips. So if you are fair skinned with lighter hair like me, dark pinks might be a way for you to get away with it 🙂

I hope you all enjoyed this look and let me know if you would like to see a tutorial to achieve it!

Urban Decay 15 Year Anniversary Palette Eyes

19 Sep

A month or so ago, I picked up the Urban Decay 15 Year Anniversary Palette from Ulta. I was so excited to have found it there because it had been sold out everywhere. I took that as a sign that I needed to buy it 😉 Needs vs. wants? Whatever haaaa.

Shortly after I had bought the palette, one of my favorite gurus on YouTube, MeghanRosette uploaded a dark eye tutorial using it. It involved a heavy double-winged eye liner and a lot of violet and purple colors. One night last weekend I decided to try it out and I have to say… I never liked purples on me before, but I loved wearing this deep, daring look.

After priming my eyes with this NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Pots & Pans, I started packing the colors on my lids.

I started putting this color on the inner half of my lid. This color in Omen is a pretty lilac color with electric blue flecks and undertones in it. The color is highly pigmented (per usual with Urban Decay shadows) and it brings out the blues in my eyes.

On the outer other half of my lid I packed the color Half Truth. This color is a deep purple color with a lot of gray undertones to it. I used a pencil brush to smoke out the color a bit and create the “V” look in the crease.

To bring this look to life, I used the color Vanilla in the tear duct and on the brow bone. This yellow toned highlight color helped make this look a little brighter.

I finished the look off with liquid eyeliner on the top lash line, with extending another second line parallel to the first wing. I also coated my lashes with Maybelline The Falsies mascara. To brighten up the lower lash line, I added the eye shadow Omen to the inner half of the lash line and then finished it off with Half Truth on the outer half.

This look is perfect if you’re going out at night and want to spice up your makeup a bit. The double-winged eye liner is also a huge trend for the fall 🙂

I hope you guys like my interpretation of this look! I linked Meghan’s original video in her name, so check it out if you want the full tutorial 🙂

What do you think? Would you wear this?
